Tools to Help Navigate Economic Insecurity

In his Candid Conversation, Dev Aujla focuses on current students, recent graduates and anyone whose employment has been affected by the current crisis and discusses relevant tools from his best-selling book, 50 Ways to Get a Job. Dev also identifies a few new or modified tools to help navigate the economic insecurity that we're facing today.

When applying for jobs, Dev recommends avoiding job boards and writing an email to a future boss instead. Dev stated that the email should include “Three ways you have mission fit and three ways that you have skill fit -- and know that there are three stories backing them up.” He continued, “You can’t just say you have three skills, you need to have those stories that prove those three skills, or you need to go out and spend this time getting those skills or finding a couple of days worth of work that shows you can do that, so you have a story to fit into the picture.”

Dev also shared that now is the perfect time to research about how an industry is changing because most industries are not able to look at the research themselves. “Make it specific to the job you want, and make it specific to the skill you want. Look at a skill, look at that skill in an industry and look at how that skill is being applied differently,” Dev said. By doing this, you will have an opportunity to learn about the skill function, talk to the person that runs that skill function and learn more about the job you would be doing.

Dev also discussed:

  • Rewriting your personal story

  • Grounding yourself by removing tolerations

  • Applying for the internships and or jobs you want no matter the location {Advice: leave off your address - we're all virtual right now!}
