BEST PRACTICES FOR YOUR VIRTUAL PRESENTATION

Here are five expert tips for setting yourself up for success in your next virtual presentation:

1. Get Familiar with Your Technology

"Nothing kills a presentation faster than a presenter who fumbles with the technology," said Mary.

Your presentation should be viewed as a performance. Like with any performance, you need to work out the kinks before you get on stage and start entertaining your audience - a virtual presentation is no different. Test out the platform you'll be using (Zoom, WebEx, Uberconference, etc.), make sure the sound works, and that the program is compatible with your computer. Don't forget to check your internet connection!

2. Show Enthusiasm

"Like in a live presentation, you want to present with a little energy and animation," said Mary.

She's right. You have even more potential distractions in a virtual presentation with animals, family, devices, etc. Energy and enthusiasm can go a long way, especially virtually. Make that connection with your audience, and yes, it's possible to achieve that via video call.

3. Take The Appropriate Amount of Time

"Without real-time visual audience feedback cues, getting the pacing right can be difficult," said Mary.

Just as you would with an in-person presentation, make sure to keep your pace in check. You don't want to speak too fast or too slow. Find a happy medium that's comfortable for you. After all - you're the star of the show.

4. Constructive Feedback is Always a Plus

"Great presenters, whether virtual or in-person, understand the value of continually honing their craft. Be sure to acknowledge your strengths as well as your areas of improvement," said Mary.

We believe this is an excellent point - constructive criticism and feedback are how we grow and improve. If anything, it's almost easier to do so virtually because you have to be on video anyway. Why not record yourself (before or during) and rewatch the presentation then take notes on your strengths and improvements.

5. Don't Hesitate to Be Yourself

"Let your personality show through. Have fun. If you look like you're enjoying the presentation, so will others," said May.

Your audience is on that call for a reason. They want to see and hear you speak. Chances are, what you have to say is incredibly valuable. You've done the research and put in the time to prepare your presentation. So, now is the time to be authentic, let your personality shine.
